We write the next chapter for Perthshire's Big Trees
Discover the beauty and quality of our natural timber and handcrafted wooden furniture, all made with care and expertise at our sawmill in Dunkeld, Scotland.
Our workshop is tucked away beyond The Hermitage in Dunkeld, home of Perthshire's famous big trees. Visitors often arrive after walking through the forest, where Douglas firs planted generations ago still tower overhead.
Good timber begins before it reaches the sawmill. We see our job as continuing that story, making useful things from trees that have shaped this landscape for decades, and sometimes centuries.
No two projects are quite the same. We make everything from chopping boards, shelves and dining tables to staircases, kitchens, structural beams and complete timber-frame buildings. Whether it's a one-off piece of furniture or timber for a whole build, we bring the same care to every project, making the most of the character and quality of locally grown wood.

Our Process
1. Finding the timber
We source timber from woodlands around Dunkeld, including windblown and locally felled trees.
2. Milling the logs
The logs are brought back to the sawmill and cut into boards using our Alaskan and bandsaw mills.
3. Air drying
The boards are stacked and air dried for around two years, allowing the timber to dry naturally.
4. Choosing the timber
Each board is selected for its grain, colour and character, then matched to the project it's best suited for.
5. Building by hand
The timber is machined, assembled and finished in our workshop, creating furniture and timber products built to last.
The Hermitage Table
In 2017, one of the famous Douglas firs at The Hermitage was blown down in a winter storm. The tree had stood for around 130 years and was one of the best-known trees in Perthshire's Big Tree Country. For many people, its loss felt like the end of an era.
When we were given the opportunity to work with the timber, we wanted to do something that reflected what the tree had meant to the community. Instead of cutting it into furniture to sell, we built a giant table and donated it to Dunkeld. Today it stands in St Ninian's Garden, where families, visitors and local groups can use it throughout the year.
For us, the project sums up what Rumbling Sawmill is about. Every tree has a history, and good timber deserves another purpose. We were proud to help give one of Perthshire's most remarkable trees a new place at the heart of the community.
